If you love Disney and Halloween, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of those special events that deserves a spot on your Disney World bucket list!

Held on select nights at Magic Kingdom during the Halloween season, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (often called MNSSHP) is a separately ticketed event filled with trick-or-treating, special entertainment, characters, Halloween-themed attractions, and plenty of Disney magic.

My family recently attended the party as part of our Disney World trip, and we had such a fun night! Here’s what you need to know before deciding whether Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is worth adding to your vacation.

What Is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party?

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place after Magic Kingdom closes to regular daytime guests on select evenings.

You’ll need a separate party ticket to attend, but one of the nice things about the event is that you can typically enter Magic Kingdom before the party officially begins. This means you can enjoy several hours in the park without purchasing a regular park ticket for that day and knock out some of those park rides without wasting precious party time.

For some families, I actually recommend making the party day a slower day. Sleep in, enjoy your resort, spend some time at the pool, and then head to Magic Kingdom ready for a late night because trust me- you’re going to want the energy!

Trick-or-Treating at Magic Kingdom

There are trick-or-treat locations throughout Magic Kingdom, and Disney provides a bag when you arrive. You can visit as many locations as you want throughout the night. (Yes, adults can trick-or-treat too!)

My kids came home with TONS of candy and I always recommend bringing your own tote bag if you are looking to get lots of candy as the bags they provide are pretty small.

This is one of those things that makes the party especially fun for families because you’re essentially trick-or-treating your way through Magic Kingdom.

Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade

The Boo-to-You Halloween Parade is easily one of my favorite parts of the party. You’ll see Disney characters dressed for Halloween, villains, Haunted Mansion characters, and, of course, the Headless Horseman making his way through Magic Kingdom.

This parade is exclusive to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, so you won’t see it during a normal park day.

Tip: There are usually multiple parade times during the evening. Depending on your family and priorities, the later parade can sometimes work better because many families with younger children have already left for the night and prime viewing spots are open. I recommended getting a spot on Main street!

Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular

You’ll also want to make time for the party’s nighttime spectacular at Cinderella Castle.

The show combines fireworks, projections, music, Disney characters, and plenty of Halloween fun. Jack Skellington is the host, which makes this one especially fun for Nightmare Before Christmas fans.

This is another party-exclusive experience, so I recommend planning your evening around it rather than trying to squeeze it in at the last minute.

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular

Calling all Hocus Pocus fans!

The Sanderson Sisters take over the Cinderella Castle stage during the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, joined by several Disney villains. Because there are typically multiple performances throughout the evening, this is another attraction where having a plan can help you maximize your party time.

Special Characters

One of the biggest reasons some Disney fans attend Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is the characters. You may find characters you don’t normally see in the parks or familiar favorites wearing special Halloween costumes.

Character lines can get LONG, especially for the most popular meet-and-greets. If meeting a particular character is a priority for your family, I recommend deciding that before you arrive so you can build your evening around it.

Trying to do every character, every ride, every show AND all of the trick-or-treating in one night can be nearly impossible. So its best to make a plan with your top must dos and try to knock those out first.

Halloween Ride Overlays

Some Magic Kingdom attractions get a little extra Halloween magic during the party.

One of the most popular is Space Mountain, which has traditionally received a special party experience that makes an already exciting ride even more fun. They turn all of the lights off and play spooky music which makes this already exciting ride even more thrilling!

These little changes are part of what makes attending the party different from simply visiting Magic Kingdom during the Halloween season.

Costumes at Disney World

One of my favorite things about Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is seeing everyone dressed up!

Unlike a normal day at Walt Disney World, guests (including adults) are allowed to wear costumes during the party, although Disney does have specific costume guidelines.

You definitely don’t HAVE to dress up, but families, couples, and groups can have a lot of fun planning themed costumes together.

Just remember that Florida can still be HOT during Halloween season, so comfort matters! Long layers that touch the ground are not permitted and masks for adults are a big no-no. Our favorite thing to do is cosplay so we are still comfortable but taking part of the holiday fun.

Can You Do Rides During Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party?

Absolutely! Many Magic Kingdom attractions remain open during the party, and wait times can sometimes be lower than what you would experience during a normal park day.

This can make the party a great opportunity to ride some of your Magic Kingdom favorites while also enjoying the Halloween festivities.

But I usually don’t recommend spending the entire party riding attractions you could experience during a regular Magic Kingdom day. You paid for the party-exclusive entertainment… make time for it!

Is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Good for Younger Kids?

One of the reasons our family loves this event is that it really is not-so-scary.

There are villains, spooky decorations, Haunted Mansion characters, and Halloween theming, but this isn’t meant to be a traditional haunted-house event. It’s still Disney.

That makes it a great Halloween option for families who want costumes, candy, characters, and Halloween fun without intense scares.

The bigger consideration with younger children is the late night. The party runs well past many kids’ normal bedtimes, so a stroller, afternoon nap, or relaxed morning can make a huge difference.

Is Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Worth the Extra Cost?

For our family, yes. But whether it’s worth it for your family depends on what you want from your Disney vacation.

If you love Halloween, Disney characters, special entertainment, trick-or-treating, and experiencing Magic Kingdom in a completely different atmosphere, I think it’s an amazing addition to a fall Disney World vacation.

If you’re visiting Disney for the first time and only have a couple of park days, however, we may plan things differently. That’s why I don’t believe there is one perfect Disney itinerary for every family and why I personalize all of my clients trips to best fit THEM.

My Biggest Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Tip

Go in with a plan but don’t try to do everything.

Before your party night, decide what matters most to your family. Is it Boo-to-You? Characters? Rides? Trick-or-treating? The fireworks? Hocus Pocus?

Pick your must-dos first and build the rest of your evening around those priorities. There is a LOT happening during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and it’s very easy to lose valuable party time trying to figure out what to do next.

That’s where planning ahead really pays off.
